ABSTRACT

The Just War Theory element of Discrimination describes legitimate moral and legal targets in warfare. The ancient Greek Plato’s definition of innocent persons afforded protection under Discrimination includes parents protecting their children when danger of war is nearby. The early scholars write of soldiers killing the enemy while under the sovereign’s authority. Agents of the state are to resist evil, which may include not taking pleasure in revenge and restraining themselves from their sinful desires to intentionally harm those who cannot defend themselves. The peace movements near the end of the first century AD saw widespread violence throughout Europe, causing church officials to pursue agreements between warriors and citizens in an effort to reduce the violence and death.
