ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to confirm or deny each Just War Theory element’s thesis through narrative discussions and findings from the case studies. It incorporates observations from the case studies that may assist future studies. The September 11 attacks also demonstrated that the U.S.’s reputation as a superpower was insufficient to deter an Armed Non-State Actors aggression. Differing from al Qaeda, Hezbollah’s actions focused on harassing a nearby state (Israel), with a desired outcome of causing the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to react, and hopefully overreact, against the Lebanese population living along the Israeli border. Raw emotions concerning the missing IDF soldiers, saving face and showing resolve clouded the Israeli government’s decisions and resulted in a knee-jerk use of military force.
