ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how the components of Knowledge Management (KM), set out in one's Framework. It explains the focal points of Research and Development (R&D) and Manufacturing to the other functions present in a pharmaceutical company. The chapter explores practices that exist and those that might, in these areas of work that have a strong application across many business sectors in addition to the Pharmaceutical Industry. The main value that emerged from the use of People Connect was its ability to connect people across the network that were working in the same functional areas, and in enabling them to seek help from each other. Whilst Microsoft's SharePoint and Opentext's Enterprise Information Management are capable of providing similar functionality, the feature of experts receiving e-mails with a clear request from an individual for help was powerful and unique at the time. The Knowledge Management Team was a part of the Operational Excellence (OE) programme.
