ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the research findings. It becomes evident that Jeanneret advocates a spatial organisation of the urban built environment in every chapter of his Manuscript, often even arguing for enclosed spaces. His emphasis on the visual perception of urban space further underlines this. In Urbanisme, Le Corbusier was to drop the issue of space in urban design. However, in La Construction des villes Jeanneret still clearly accepts space as a key part of urban design aesthetics. He also aims to show that beauty and utility are far from being mutually exclusive, as in fact they help to determine one another. With such sound cornerstones, La Construction des villes hardly resembles the work of a clueless novice: it is an unconventional, well-thought-out compilation of contemporary theories focusing on the concept of space and its perception, the attempt to reconcile beauty and utility, and the issue of preserving historic monuments and buildings.
