Leadership roles in large complex projects are often diffuse. It might be thought of in terms of leadership layers rather than individual roles. The success of a complex project is primarily dependent upon the leadership layers working in synergy. Complex projects require higher order leadership and management skills at every level of leadership. Redundancy Engineering is a branch of engineering that attempts to eliminate the need for human intervention by designing redundancy into the system components. The two kinds of redundancy incorporated are passive redundancy and active redundancy. If a leader is to have carriage of the project, she/he must also have the authority to select and replace key personnel. Accountability is the litmus test for project human resource management. Redundancy for key roles is built-in at the planning stage. Assessment and role definition must be developed together.
