As indicated in the Preface, this book has aimed to explore the role that the cultural sector can play in working with and supporting LGBT people:

Whilst I recognise that young (and not-so-young) people may well find it easier to come out today – and, indeed, the necessity to have life framed by comingout stories may be fading – nevertheless we know that many people still struggle and still have to face hostility, threats, even violence. One of the motivators for much of my work (writing, running courses, talking to people about being gay and the issues we still face) is to try to improve the situation for those who ‘come after’ me, to try to prevent more young people being bullied and feeling so overwhelmed that they self-harm or take their own lives.
