ABSTRACT

Following the outbreak of war in September 1939, Williams sent the majority of her original manuscripts to a friend in North Wales for safe keeping, and resigned from her part-time post at Southlands Training College. The Camden Girls School was evacuated from London to Uppingham, Rutland at this time, and Williams was one of the teachers accompanying pupils. 1 Conditions in Uppingham proved to be far from adequate and the school moved to Grantham, Lincolnshire within a month, remaining there for two years. After munitions factories in Grantham were bombed, the school moved again to Stamford, Lincolnshire before returning to London at the end of 1943.
