ABSTRACT

The ideal form of project authorization procedure has to be suited to the value, complexity and importance of the projects normally handled by the organization. A very common form of authorization procedure is the one or two page document that is issued to all company departments to summarize the project requirements and announce that the project is open and authorized. This document is often called a project authorization or a works order. This chapter shows a works order form of a type that has been used in companies undertaking manufacturing projects. The authorization decision for a new internally funded project will certainly be complicated if other management change or IT projects are already in progress in the organization, or if the application for the project is one of several such applications. Apart from the question of resources and available funds, some management change projects can interfere with each other. This takes us into the territory of portfolio management.
