ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the involvement of civil society in World Heritage Committee processes. In the 1990s, participation from civil society grew in tandem with the increase in States Parties and designated sites. One significant development was the creation of an organization specifically centred on World Heritage cities. The chapter overviews the various players involved in the implementation of the World Heritage Convention reveals the dedication and enthusiasm that each brings to the cause. From relatively modest beginnings, States Parties, technical advisory bodies and UNESCO expanded their activities and resources to deal with the complexity and diversity of World Heritage issues. This growth within the organizations of all official interveners is matched by an increased interest in civil society and its diverse communities. This evolution bears witness to the attractive and promising vision of World Heritage to safeguard and conserve the world's most significant cultural and natural heritage places.
