ABSTRACT

In theorizing, there are no ready-made puzzles waiting to be organized in the right

and final way. Instead, theorizing is often about constructing the puzzle itself by

creating the shapes of the pieces and drawing the synthesizing picture. This con-

struction work is done by reasoning, understanding, and playing with concepts and

terms, sometimes in relation to empirical patterns and sometimes in relation to purely

theoretical arguments. To theorize is to make some advancement in the under-

standing of social phenomena and patterns (Corley and Gioia 2011: 12). In per-

forming this work, displays and property spaces are useful in different ways. Displays,

as graphical formats, are valuable as tools to help visualize and drag into the open

lurking and sometimes fuzzy thoughts and ideas about how relata and relations are

connected to each other. Property spaces are graphical formats that are fruitfulways of

systematically and logically relating conceptual dimensions and properties to each

other in order to formulate theoretical typologies.
