ABSTRACT

Around the time Jantsannorov was composing his first film scores and Jumdaan was learning the art of filmmaking in Moscow, another Mongolian student, Sanjaasrengiin Zorig, was studying philosophy and social science at Moscow State University and was equally influenced by perestroika. After returning to Mongolia, he spearheaded a series of peaceful demonstrations in Ulaanbaatar at the turn of the decade, which provided the catalyst for the Democratic Revolution in 1990 and the end of the Mongolian socialist regime. After July 1990, there was much economic, political and societal disarray in Mongolia whilst people became accustomed to the fall of the socialist regime, the transition to democracy and the influx of new opportunities this brought about. Opportunities arose for anyone who wished to be a musician and those who had played outlawed genres such as popular music in secret under the socialist regime were now able to perform publicly.
