ABSTRACT

Information technology is synonymous with knowledge work on the basis of sharing information and transforming ways of working. But in many cases technology excludes older workers in a way similar to how physical strength once acted as the barrier to manual work for ageing blue-collar employees. Current workplace design does not accommodate their alternative ways of working. Older workers also spoke about appreciating training that takes their particular level of technological agility and learning pace into account. Older workers benefits from alternatives to screen-based work for creating, processing and storing information. The physical move to open plan and the cultural shift associated with open plan has left them needing to adapt very rapidly to significantly different ways of working. In order to keep on top of relevant technology and use it to best effect, older workers told us that they enlist colleagues, help-desks, face-to-face training, e-training, sons and daughters and even grandchildren.
