ABSTRACT

This chapter examines foundational design principles that promote sustainable tall building development. It reviews a wide range of topics concerning passive and active design strategies, including daylighting and natural ventilation, facade types, high-performance glazing, solar shading, thermal chimneys, artificial lighting systems, vertical transportation, access and egress, and community spaces. It also discusses building materials, structural methods, and engineering and mechanical systems, as well as recycling technologies, water conservation and collection methods, and vertical landscaping. The chapter also elaborates on new technologies for harnessing renewable energies such as wind turbines, photovoltaic, biomass, and geothermal. It closes by providing sustainable site planning and design guidelines.
