ABSTRACT

This chapter explores different aspects of youth culture and leisure amongst this group of 1960s school leavers. It gives a brief review of the large body of sociological literature concerned with youth and youth cultures. The chapter explores the leisure pursuits evident in this study and the changes that occurred in the everyday lives of teenagers once they had left school and started work, gaining some measure of independence. It examines the patterns of consumption amongst this group, their money management practices and the true extent of disposable income. The chapter explores the aspects of parental authority and control in relation to teenagers' sense of freedom and independence. Whilst Frith suggests that the rise of the teenager was in part due to greater disposable incomes created by young people having well-paid jobs and less obligation than previous generations to contribute their wages to the family income.
