ABSTRACT

NEITHER the ancient Götar nor the other nations in the North were so forgetful of their ancestors that they could neglect to display lofty stones as monuments in honour of those whom they resolved to bury in the earth. Even today you can see enormous rocks, wonderfully fitted together, with a horizontal set across uprights, raised by the might of giants in the fashion of an immensely high, wide doorway. A notable example may be viewed two long miles from the town of Skara on the way to the country parish of Källby. 1 There, in a place where three roads meet, can be seen three enormous rocks of the sort referred to above, most beautifully carved with Gothic inscriptions. If any curious investigator is willing to traverse wildernesses and open plains in order to examine such stones, he will discover innumerable marvels to gaze at, which it would be unnecessary and irksome to introduce here.
