ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the diversity of networks, developing a typology based on indicators and measures taken from the networks. The types of network have fairly different numbers of cases 11 28, 58, 68 and 44 cases, respectively. The most frequent types, therefore, are small to medium sized, and followed by the medium sized networks. By contrast, the presence of people from outside the local area tends to increase, though not uniformly the larger networks present higher levels of localism. The chapter reviews the exercise for sociability, determining the different types in existence. The trajectories reported in the interviews indicate the existence of various individuals who had migrated several times between So Paulo and their original home towns. Finally, it combines the two typologies in order to determine the types of relational patterns present in the networks of individuals living in poverty, as well as the conditions for their presence. The types are illustrated by concrete examples from the field research.
