ABSTRACT

The making of things inevitably means extracting resources from the earth, using energy and making noise; and once used our products create waste. The task therefore is to minimise the impacts of what we do. In this chapter we look at how to mitigate our environmental risks. We examine nine main environmental risks:

1 emissions to air, including greenhouse gases 2 water pollution 3 solid waste 4 consuming scarce or non-renewable resources 5 toxic or hazardous substances 6 damage to nature through the destruction of natural habitats or amenity space 7 noise pollution 8 contaminated land 9 water shortage.
