ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes embodiments and narratives of masculinity as they are communicated and portrayed in trans male video blogs. It explores the uniqueness of each audiovisual story as vloggers tell and enact it through the medium of the vlog. The four vlogers discussed in the chapter are Charles, Skylar, Tony, and Carson, appearing in the order of when they started to vlog. The chapter focuses on the different ways in which the trans male vloggers document and discusses their bodily transformations as well as the notions of men and masculinity that come into play in their videos. In Tony's first series of vlogs, he articulates a feeling of bodily and social disorientation. The vlogs bear witness to the importance of others recognizing Tony as male and the tremendous time and energy he invests in thinking about and monitoring his appearance. Carson's videos are tools for autobiographical creation and sense making, taking the shape of or intersecting with aesthetic experimentation.
