ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the notion of 'screen birth' as a starting point for outlining and analyzing the various ways in which the trans vloggers emerged and developed online through the medium of the vlog. The focus is on the vlog as a site for the co-construction and renegotiation of trans identity. It explores the different styles of vlogging, drawing on the metaphor of screen birth as an overall framing. The framing of screen birth provides a way of thinking about the intersection and co-production of trans identity and the vlog as a medium. Haptic visuality is an interesting concept in relation to the trans vlogs, as the vlogs are cinematic expressions of the people 'who move between culture'. The potential polyvocality of lived experience is silenced because the stories of trans people tell the clinician must mirror or echo the diagnosis, matching the master narrative.
