ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the basic activities that are essential to effective energy management and explains the most commonly used enabling tools. In addition, energy supply management requires an understanding of the terms and conditions used in the power and gas industries. It is important for senior management to establish an energy policy. The ideal policy will be short and should include specific targets that can be updated as progress is made. Operational management covers cost centre managers and site managers as well as energy management specialists. The energy management matrix was developed in the 1990s as a technique for assessing an organisation's position in the different areas important for a successful energy management programme. These areas are energy policy, organising, skills and knowledge, information systems, marketing and communications and investment. A common component of energy management programmes has been 'energy audits' or 'energy surveys'.
