ABSTRACT
Before carrying out a detailed analysis of various experiments of participatory budgeting in Europe, we feel it is necessary first to provide readers with a conceptual road map. In a broad comparative survey, given that each case is unique, there is such diversity that there is a serious risk of getting lost on the way. Understanding detail can come at the cost of developing an overall understanding. In order to help us on our road, we gradually constructed a typology that provides identifying characteristics, similar to the method used in another field by those analysing different types of welfare state and capitalism.
