ABSTRACT

Whether we are parents, teachers, tutors, trainers, coaches, managers or have any other role in an education process, we need to be effective facilitators of learning. The pattern is presented as a visual diagram, that looks, at first glance, like the outside shape of a spider's web. This pattern gives an instant insight into the type of learners we are dealing with, the successes they are likely to have and the potential problems they will encounter. For example, ELLI has identified a consistent and somewhat rigid pattern in the learning style of many young people with social and behavioural difficulties that have led them into trouble through violence and anti-social behaviour. This pattern is quite different to the patterns demonstrated by those who learn effectively in a wide range of contexts, both formal and informal. If, as facilitators, we can identify the learning patterns exhibited by others and help them to recognise how to expand or manipulate these patterns.
