ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the elements that will ensure excellent learning design in organisational contexts. Even in the midst of the most technical, knowledge-based training there are opportunities to apply creative and interactive learning experiences. In adult learning there are four key learning methodologies that, when combined, accelerate and strengthen adult learning. These four learning technologies are: Co-operative learning, Generative learning, Learner-centred learning and Problem-based learning. Learner-centred learning environments focus on the development of critical thinking and life-long learning skills, primarily; questioning, meta-cognition, and reflection. Problem-based learning is the type of inquisitive and investigative education for which there is no clear answer or procedural rule. In much organisational training, problem-based learning facilitates the rehearsal of the increasingly familiar business situations where unprecedented circumstances require new thinking to generate appropriate solutions. When these four learning technologies are explored, it becomes even clearer that they are all used in a genuinely experiential, group learning programme or workshop.
