ABSTRACT

The introduction begins with presenting the sense of time, temporality and rhythm as ubiquitous features of the built environment and the urban experience, and as key attributes defining the temporal aesthetics of everyday places. It then introduces the notion of Temporal Urban Design as an alternative form of design, focusing on the temporal aesthetics of urban places and the importance of the sense of time and rhythm in the urban environment. Temporal Urban Design poses the questions, what time is this place and how do we design for it? It brings forward a new perspective akin to music – a methodological framework of rhythmanalysis – and explores modes of practice towards better temporal design quality in our cities. Lastly it explores the research motivations and provides an overview of the contents of the book.
