ABSTRACT

Chapter Nine is an epilogue. It discusses the practice of Temporal Urban Design and whether, and how, to incorporate the senses of time and flow, sensorial engagement and social rhythmic practice and processes. It approaches the question of how to design and influence senses of time, rhythm and place-temporality in the city space. It challenges designers and planners to expand their practices and methodologies to include not only the practice of place-rhythmanalysis but also to respond with innovative design process and propositions. The first part reviews and frames the realm of practice, and identifies a new momentum towards emergent temporal analysis and time-focused approaches in design. In this context, it scopes existing research strands which will either contrast, complement and or integrate, and as such assist the development Temporal Urban Design as a field of practice. The second part frames action by laying out the fundamental principles for temporal urban design practice. These include a) an interdisciplinary and collaborative practice towards methodological innovation, b) tactical interventionism design, c) urban craft and craftmanship in rhythmanalysis and the temporal design of the city, and d) the design for a slow and soft city. It concludes by pointing to the need for further in-depth research.
