ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces a more inclusive term: media tourism. Strictly speaking, the fact that tourists are drawn to the scene of a fictional story is not a new phenomenon. Media tourism often follows a capricious pattern: it emerges suddenly but can just as quickly vanish again when the public becomes gripped by some new blockbuster. The book involves an international comparison of three popular TV detectives, who each have inspired significant tourist streams: Inspector Morse in Oxford, Baantjer in Amsterdam and Wallander in the Swedish coastal town of Ystad. It also focuses on one of the most long-lasting and successful film series of all time: James Bond. Over a period of almost 50 years, 23 official' James Bond films have been released. The book explores one of the greatest anti-heroes in popular culture: Count Dracula.
