ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses major research findings and implications for tourism planning are identified. It examines the perceptions and objectives of four key stakeholder groups involved in ethnic tourism. Ethnic tourism research focused on four key stakeholder groups but relatively little is known about the roles and perceptions of other stakeholders such as nongovernment organizations (NGOs), ethnic minority organizations, and international organizations involved in ethnic tourism. Although this research reviews Banna, many of the findings would be similar in communities in other developing countries whose cultural traditions and economic situations are being developed for ethnic tourism. It is hoped that recommendations developed from this study can be applied to mitigate the negative impacts and to reinforce the positive aspects of ethnic tourism in China and elsewhere. As indicated earlier, the development of ethnic tourism involves a number of socio-cultural issues, including preservation of the culture of ethnic minorities, the use of tourism as a form of economic development.
