ABSTRACT
Nuo is primarily concerned with the exorcism of evil spirits which are believed to be responsible for misfortune in people’s lives. Nuo also provides its clients with a means of making and fulfilling vows to the gods as a form of insurance against misfortune; the client makes a vow that if a particular misfortune has been successfully avoided or ceases to be troublesome, then a thanksgiving ritual will be held at an appointed time.
