ABSTRACT

The alliance between Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto was therefore a fulfilment of Daniel Arap Moi’s longstanding wish to use the ethnic card by forging an alliance between the Kalenjin and the Kikuyu, by far the two largest ethnic groups in Kenya, in order to beat the opposition. But it was also his way of returning favour to the Kenyatta family for a longstanding friendship and loyalty to the founding father of the nation, who had made it possible for him to ascend to the presidency, against huge opposition from certain sections of the Kikuyu political elite. Kenyatta insisted that the elections would go ahead as stipulated by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, which was also rocked by resignations and death threats of some of their commissioners. Once again, power, greed and self-interest would trump democracy in Kenya and with it dire political consequences that would continue to hound and haunt Kenya for a long time to come.
