ABSTRACT

Critical path method (CPM) schedules or in a schedule risk analysis. In this chapter we see some of the problems commonly encountered when the schedule risk analyst first meets the project schedule and how the schedule logic can be improved for application of Monte Carlo simulation. This chapter illustrates some of the problems and extends them to the impact on project schedule risk analysis that uses Monte Carlo simulation. We often run into parallel phases that are linked start-to-start and finish-to-finish, often with lags present, particularly in summary schedules where the phases are long and the preferred finish-to-start logic is just no. available. This rule is important for CPM scheduling but it is crucial for the success of schedule risk analysis using Monte Carlo simulation. Experience shows that the schedule risk analyst cannot leave this task to the project schedulers and that repairing the project schedule may take days before the schedule is ready for simulation.
