ABSTRACT

The parish of St Aidan's, Rothercliffe, not far from Sheffield, is feeling this decline. Within St Aidan's there are sizeable pockets of poverty and one particularly notorious housing estate, the Arcadia. Like Southcott, Tim in Rothercliffe developed a theologically based strategy starting with the desire to exhibit the fullness of Christian initiation an initiation into a teaching, worshipping, and caring community. St Aidan's might have been much less caught up in these theological excitements were it not for Graham and Stephen. Traditionally, teenagers from the Rothercliffe area finished their education with a six-year apprenticeship in the steel industry. Cambridge was a far cry from Rothercliffe, but its theological stirrings would soon reverberate there, even as far as the Arcadia estate. In the surrounding countryside, well beyond St Aidan's boundaries, there are some leafy areas and comfortable residences.
