ABSTRACT

This study of poetry as a resource for Reflective Practice (Schön 1983) in continuing professional development (CPD) uses qualitative empirical research methods within a practical theological framework. Grounded in a Theological Reflection on the author’s practice through a Professional Doctorate, this critical analysis of Reflective Practice theory and professional identity takes clergy continuing ministerial education (CME) within the Church of England (C of E) as a case study, demonstrating poetry’s value and potential as a powerful reflexive form for CPD. Pryce examines meaning-making process in groups, distilling fresh pedagogical approaches for CPD practitioners to work effectively with poetry, developing an innovative practical model for group reflection around poetry in Reflective Practice Poetry Groups (RPPGs). The book presents an imaginative model of Practical Theology as methodological framework for researching professional practice, focussing particularly on the contribution of poetry in ethnographic inquiry and the effectiveness of auto-ethnographic poetry as reflexive method.
