ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 describes research design shaping the study, establishing the contextual nature of Theological Reflection on practice in empirical inquiry, articulating prior commitments and the conceptual framework informing epistemological and interpretive choices in practitioner research. Reflection on poetry in Christian formation, discipleship and ministerial practice is followed by reflection on the character of continuing ministerial development in the C of E, the power of metaphor and poetry in shaping Anglican ministerial identity. The poetical nature of Practical Theology is developed as an appropriate framework for experience-based research into professional learning, particularly its capacity to be attentive to language and imagination and to facilitate transformation of professional practice. The chapter offers critical reflection on constructing an ethical framework for researching professional practice, including themes of handling power and confidentiality in relation to clients and colleagues. A summary of empirical research practice includes reflection on part-time research, managing participant identity and conducting research in group settings, concluding with reflections on researcher reflexivity.
