ABSTRACT

It’s not clear exactly how much the UK public sector spends on projects: no central register is kept. However, we know it’s a lot. The public sector procures £125 billion of goods and services per annum (NAO, 2006; HM Treasury, 2007). A significant percentage of that will be done through projects. Add in the cost of civil servants working on projects and it seems likely that the UK spends an eleven-figure sum on projects each year.
