ABSTRACT

The project scope definition deals with the "what" and "why" the project is being undertaken. Project scope basically defines what needs to be done. It should be recognized that if the project is inadequately defined and not suitably linked with organizational strategy, then there is a high probability of project failure. Project scope is essential to project management success. It has backward integration to corporate strategy and forward integration to project activity identification and the eventual project plan. Project managers should carry out the project scope tasks before any other project management activities and ensure that all relevant stakeholders are identified and actively involved. Projects may encounter difficulties because they are not well defined, resulting in unnecessary work effort that often does not lead to the intended outcome. Project scope must be defined in an unambiguous manner, defining precisely what is included and excluded in the project.
