ABSTRACT

Geoengineering, planet hacking and terraforming are terms that describe global-scale technologically driven interventions in, and management of, the Earth. The fundamental premise is that humans might be competent in Earth-altering. The monstrous effects of human interventions in Earth systems are listed in Paul Crutzen's Nature article that signalled the Anthropocene – 'Geology of Mankind': 'the consequences are, among others, acid precipitation, photochemical 'smog' and climate warming.' The Monster Earth of the Anthropocene is a warning. A daunting task lies ahead for scientists and engineers to guide society towards environmentally sustainable management during the era of the Anthropocene. In 2002, his Nature article on the Anthropocene, Paul Crutzen introduced the possibility of geoengineering as a corrective to the destabilising force of anthropogenic climate change. The Anthropocene calls for the kinds of improvised adjustments and accommodations that recognise that Earth systems processes will always escape human efforts to control, stabilise or secure them.
