ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the educational system in England. The education system in England is governed by the Department of Education, which is responsible for policy on education, children and youth issues up to the age of 19. Some LAs run a selective education system, although in the move from selective education, many grammar schools changed into comprehensive schools in the 1970s, although some retain 'grammar school' in their names. As a result of the Education Reform Act 1988, the national curriculum was developed and then fully introduced in 1992. Looking forward, 2015 will see considerable changes to the UK's education system brought in by the Conservative Liberal Democrat coalition government. Some argue the emphasis on measurement and competitiveness between schools is resulting in an increasingly segregated education system. Confirmatory research by the Institute of Education shows that the British education system has not escaped class divisions.
