ABSTRACT

Religio-political non-conformist organisations developed as a result of the political, social and economic instability Zimbabwe has experienced. The formation of CiM centred on direct intervention in response to the cries of the victims of political violence. CiM is an ecumenical gathering of members from Christian denominations and organisations in the province of Manicaland. The Apostles Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ), with direct support from the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) PF regime and regulate all 350 apostolic and Zionist churches in Zimbabwe. During the liberation war it disapproved of the support given to the liberation movement by the ZCC and the World Council of Churches. This chapter explains the conceptual framework of Brewer, Higgins and Teeney the pastoral statements are tantamount to passive peace-making, resulting in negative peace. The distinction between negative and positive peace is often traced to Galtung. The backchannel efforts by the church leadership are necessary to initiate the political peace-making process upon which social peace-making builds.
