ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the popularity of natural hair blogs group subscribers, the influence of advertising of hair care products on the blogs, and the perceived solidarity among Black women opting for natural hairstyles. At some natural hair websites, there are also vlogs that allow the viewer to see for themselves the use of products and/or process of obtaining a certain natural hairstyle. Hair blogs are a modern take on group identity because they are created virtually. However, hair blogs are also a means of stratifying national and global societies. Not only are beauty salons advertised on natural hair blogs, but also businesses that sell hair accessories. Some subscribers only want to see the comments of other subscribers or their vlogs. What network members/subscribers think and relate to are based on parameters set by the group. While the dolls skin tone is that of Whites, the hair is advertised as crazy, wild and wacky hair.
