ABSTRACT

To be practicable the proposed LIF model must be able to accommodate the majority of stated demand in plays first performed at LIF in the 1660s and early 1670s. More specifically, there are two key tests on which it stands or falls: (1) the model has only one set of backshutters; consequently, there must be no indication in the plays of successive backshutter discovery or relieve scenes; (2) the model has only two practical forestage doors; consequently there must be no indication in the plays that three or more practical doors or associated balconies are required simultaneously in any scene. Once these key aspects are examined, other tests related to space, more general scenic demand and practical stage management may be considered.
