ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the issues of safety both inside club spaces and outside in negotiating the city at night will be explored in more depth. In both settings the negotiation of sexualities and gender are at the core of how comfortable women clubbers feel. Thus heterosexuality as well as gender is the dominant force controlling city spaces and places, and the system of heteronormality regulates all women regardless of how they see their sexual identities. It is both the risks and pleasures of finding a place in the night time economy of the city. The chapter focuses on a discussion of the issues regarding risk and safety for women using club spaces in Manchester. Issues of safety and sexuality were experienced differently depending on the space that was being negotiated as there was an understanding of certain mainstream clubs as 'meat markets', where male attitudes to women were predatory and sexist.
