ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in this book. The book deals with the archæology of France in this same period. The purpose is to chart what monuments were visible, what discoveries were made, and how they affected the work of local historians in assessing the early history of their town or region. The French Renaissance attitude to Roman antiquities is a complex one, made up of a broadly negative view of Rome, and an admiration for her relics. The role of French diplomats in Italy was capital. Apart from their procurement of original objects for figures at court, they reveal a passion for collecting, which emulates that of Italian princes of the Church. The voyage to Rome became an integral part of the training of young artists and architects.
