ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book's examination on management, including health and safety, shows that most end with a sense of direction or purpose. A cynical view of health and safety is that its adherents have no interest in understanding what is required to further reduce injury rates. Health and safety can be defended on moral grounds and to challenge it can be portrayed as an act of immorality. Equally its critics allude to the inhibiting effects of health and safety on business activities. The 1974 health and safety at work act give the health and safety executive enormous power, with power comes responsibility. In short, between the lack of adequate data and the competing schools of thought, health and safety worldwide is in a chaotic state. There is a need for a change in thinking, in academic jargon there is a need for a paradigm shift.
