ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses the form and impact of the 2012 Games and their security operation on East London. It considers the wider social impacts of grandiose Olympic planning. The book outlines the specifics of the 2012 Olympic bid and how its promises and budget have shifted since its original presentation, now beset by competing claims to 2012 dividends and now unsustainable fiscal commitments. It examines the specific East London context with particular emphasis on its unique and shifting social, cultural, economic and demographic features, impacted by generations of economic change, de-industrialization and war. The book presents some case studies of activist organizations that have taken a sceptical stance towards the 2012 Olympic dream. It concludes by drawing together the key themes to articulate how the 2012 Games and its safety and security infrastructure will impact upon East London.
