ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book demonstrates the utility of a visual approach such as used by Visual Sociologists, Anthropologists, and Ethnographers along with the study of Vernacular Landscapes to document. It analyses how the built environment reflects the changing cultural and class identities of neighborhood residents. The book explores how global forces and the competition between urban residents in sometimes violently contested terrains have been changing the faces of cities across the globe. It considers the related process of gentrification in which the class, or relative economic status, of "invaders" and local residents was at play. Historical photographic archives are used in the processes of Historical Landmark research, restoration, and preservation. The book looks at some of the iconic places and peoples that provide a firm foundation for expanding comparisons.
