ABSTRACT

Various methods of measuring Situation Awareness (SA) have been proposed and applied in different domains.

This chapter presents a review of SA measures, the aim of which was to identify the most suitable approach for studying SA in road transport. With naturalistic on-road studies becoming more popular and representing the most valid approach to studying road user SA, an on-road study-based network analysis approach to SA assessment is recommended. To demonstrate the approach, a case study application examining SA in drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists is presented. The case study indicates that driver, motorcyclist and cyclist SA is different, in terms of both structure and content, even when faced with similar road situations. The findings also provide insights into the issues underpinning road crashes involving distinct road user groups. Further studies applying the on-road study-based SA network analysis approach are recommended.
