ABSTRACT

Building on the key findings from Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6, the next phase of the research program involved using a sociotechnical systems design method, Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA), to create a series of new intersection design concepts. The first phase of the intersection design process involved using methods from CWA to identify a series of intersection design requirements that (a) were consistent with sociotechnical systems theory design principles and (b) responded to some of the issues identified in the on-road studies. The aim of this chapter is to present the CWA outputs and discuss the findings and associated intersection design requirements. We have also provided an overview of the methods and steps taken so that the reader can apply the same process in their own work. The design requirements provide a set of high-level Situation Awareness (SA) requirements to support the design of intersections that fulfil the SA needs of its different end users.
