ABSTRACT

The next phase of the research program involved creating new intersection design concepts through the application of a sociotechnical systems design framework as part of a novel participatory design process. The intention was to create intersection design concepts that, once implemented, would support Distributed Situation Awareness and safe interactions between different forms of road users. In this chapter, we describe the design approach adopted and provide an overview of three intersection design concepts: the Self-regulating intersection, Turning teams and the Circular concept. An evaluation of the design process adopted is also presented. The findings indicate that participants felt it was a useful design process and in particular that positive features included aspects such as metaphorical thinking, the level of collaboration and the focus on designing for all road user groups. It is concluded that the toolkit could be used in conjunction with system-based analysis frameworks other than Cognitive Work Analysis, expanding its potential utility for design across the safety-critical domains.
