ABSTRACT

In Germany, just as in other European countries, the share of people with a migration background has been steadily increasing. Turks are the largest minority group in Germany and in Berlin. According to the 2011 census, about 17.7 per cent of all people with a migration background were of Turkish origin. Within Germany, Turks are concentrated in various cities such as Dortmund, Duisburg, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Berlin (Luft 2009). In Berlin – the only city in the Eastern part of Germany with a significant number of Turks – the share of people with a Turkish migration background is above average (21.4 per cent).
