ABSTRACT

Berlin, just as other large cities in Europe and other parts of the world is a multicultural, highly diverse place. In 2012, 27.36 per cent of the population had a migration background, a number which is much higher among the young Berliners: 44.32 per cent among those under 18. 1 In various neighbourhoods, the share of ethnic minorities surpasses 50 per cent, which makes these areas ‘majority minority’. The city attracts young people from all over the world (partly due to its relatively low rents), many of whom are artists or otherwise self-employed. Berlin is, moreover, a city famous for its gay scene, which is also frequented by ethnic minorities, among them queer Turks (Petzen 2004).
